African cichlid tankmates?

What other fish can i put with my cichlids? My cichlids are 5in+ I have 7 of them in a 55G. I also have a needle fish, cory cats, and a algea eater with them. They dont seem to pick on these guys ever besides when they get to close to there territory.

There aren't really a lot of options, given the aggressive nature of the fish and their preferred water conditions. What sort of algae eater is yours? It could be any number of things commonly sold as "algae eater": siamese algae eater, chinese algae eater, a pleco of some sort, etc. Not sure about the needle fish, but you should think about moving the cory cats to another tank. there's a common horror story that you'll see repeated over and over again on this site where someone's cichlid tries to eat a cory and the spines on the cory get the catfish caught in the cichlid's throat, often resulting in both fish dead. This can happen out of the blue, even when the cichlids previously left the cories alone.

I believe the best tankmates for Rift Lake African cichlids are usually Rift Lake catfish. There are a couple syno species that work well, but I'm not an expert on them so someone else will have to vouch for their compatibility with your tank.

My corys have been with my cichlids for a year they grew up in the same tank. I have a golden algea eater thats about 6in. I wanted to put like tiger barbs or rosy barbs with them.

Synodontis are really excellent fish if you're a catfish person (I am). I've read in many places that they mix well with rift lake cichlids. My Syno Eupterus is going into my Malawi tank once I get it up and running. But they do get big, mine is 6" and growing, I've seen them a foot long at pet stores. So I don't think I'd put one in a 55 gal especially when there are 7 cichlids in there already.

Why do you want more fish? Just getting bored and need to freshen up the tank? Your tank sounds about fully stocked. Maybe you should be looking into tank #2 :)

My Cichlids don't bother either of my plecos. I also had a Blue Knight Lobster in the tank for around a year until he crawled out one day when I was in Peru on vacation...

A good sized Clown Loach might fit in nicely. Most cichlid tanks I see that have harmony have a clown loach or two (which I believe can reach a size of 12"). Depending on the types of cichlids you have, a larger tetra might work. African Brown Knifefish might too, but I'd be careful on that one as they get around 9" or a bit bigger and from what I have read about them require a little more care than cichlids. Check out a local aquarium store that is privately owned (not a corp.), they tend to know more about their fish stock and their compatability. Good Luck.
