why do they sell them?

I saw a black knife fish that was interesting looking in a 10 gallon tank at a pet store. I wasn't about to buy it without knowing something about it. When I got home and did a little research, I found out they they can get 18" long and the minimum tank volume is 150 gallons. Why do they sell them??

Because some people have the capability to care for them. A 150g isn't *that* big - its not like its over 200g, a 150g is still commonly sold in most petstores or can be ordered.

I've never had any problems with 'Impulse Buying'. They're just animals that I forgot I had planned to get.

Yes I guess it is the responsibility of the buyer to know what the species will require.

I think fish grow to fit their tank. Like you said, they "can" grow to that size! I have two black moor fish in a 40 gal tank with only one Cory. The black moors started at only a couple inches and are now about 8 inches long and quite thick as well. If I had more fish in there, I'm sure they would not be that big!

Just a thought!

Well, they can’t grow bigger than the tank....

It is not clear if there is a perceivable negative impact to having a fish’s growth stunted. There’s a lot of anecdotal evidence on both sides.

Your last post immediately reminded me of George Carlin's joke about "stuff." Ha ha!
