I just recently purchased my first 37 gallon fish tank.

I would like some advice on more decorations and stocking, I am confused on whether to go with a Gourami or Angelfish, and definitely want cories, shrimp, and a Kuhl loach for the bottom, but need more ideas for fish that are most compatible with Angelfish or Gouramis.

Welcome to the forum.

I have keep a few Gourami and they are very peaceful fish, I have keep more Angels and they are peaceful also but at breeding they can be a little aggressive. I have both in a 55g right right now never need any issues. Both do fine with cory but I can't say about a Kulh loach never keep one of those.

As for decor it all depends on what you want the tank to look like. It looks nice so far but it was me I would add some tall fake plants. Real plants will do also but takes a while for them to grow in.

I had a 37 once and due to the height of the tank, I always thought a pair of angels would be nice. However, it's still only a 30x12 footprint so I would look to stock it like a 29 gallon.

125 - BGK, chanchito cichlid, pictus cats, silver dollars, palmas bichir
125 - cichlids (severums, bolivian rams, chocolate), rainbows ( turquoise, red), loaches (angelicus, zebra, kuhli and horseface), plecos (BN, RL and clown), denison barbs, tiretrack eel, pearl gouramis, betta
90 - Congo tetras, african knife, upside down cats, spotted ctenopoma, kribensis, delhezzi bichir
2.5 - betta

Tall fake plants: I just got this one and I think its great.

It fills a lot of space for little money and it looks pretty real.

Yup great piece of decor. I had that in my 45 which was also a tall tank. I recently posted a video which showed it in the tank. Stocking 45 thread.

Have any of you done a mix of fake and real plants, because I was thinking of putting a few plastic plants in with the live ones until the live ones get bigger. I went fish browsing today and really liked the rasboras for schooling. Are they safe to keep with Angels?

I have used fake and real plants at the same time. No issues and like you said gives you time for the real ones to grow in then you can pull the fake ones.

I think rasboras are safe with angels but never keep them so can't be sure.

it can be done.

The really good idea is using live plants.

my.02

maintain Fw and marine system with a strong emphasis on balanced, stabilized system that as much as possible are self substaning.

have maintained FW systems for up to 9 years with descendants from original fish and marine aquariums for up to 8 years.

With no water changes, untreated tap water, inexpensive lighting by first starting the tank with live plants (FW) or macro algae( marine)
