Brown stringy stuff on plant - help!

I have a 40litre tank which is has been set up for almost 2 months now and is still cycling (it has a few cory cats in it which are super healthy, but eventually I'd like to add a betta). Ammonia is at 0.25, nitrite 0, nitrate 0 - taking forever to cycle but that's not the issue.

So it's got a fertaliser base substrate with a layer of normal substrate on top, and quite a few (10) plants which seem to be doing fine mostly (a couple look a little ropey). My issue is with an (I think) Amazonian sword plant that I have at the back - it looks healthy BUT a few weeks ago I noticed it started getting brown spots on the underside of the leaves, and gradually these started to grown into these really horrible thick stringy brown things that seem to wrap around the leaves and strangle it.

I thought at first it might just be part of the diatom bloom, which I have had and is present on the tops of the leaves.. but I've not seen the stringy bits on any of the pictures I've seen.

Can anyone help identify please? I've tried picking it all off and cleaning it away but it just comes back and it looks awful!!

That aint a amazon sword, its a java fern. What your seeing is new growth developing, there will be tiny baby plants that grow on the leaves and once theres 3 or so leaves and extensive amount of roots, pluck it off and tie it onto something else.

I've never had any problems with 'Impulse Buying'. They're just animals that I forgot I had planned to get.

Oooh you're totally right! (Just been looking at pictures online). I'm sure LFS told me wrong then as they said it was a sword, wouldn't be the first time lol thank you for the info! Here I was thinking it was a sickly plant but it's actually super healthy! I'll try and"pluck" some off when it gets bigger and put it in my other tank hehe. Thank you again! 😀
