Any advice for pet store employee?
Hi! So recently having been moved to the fish department, I found out that when fish arrive to the store, the owners have allowed bags to float in tanks for 3 or more hours after arrival. Seeing as i have worked in another pet store before this one, we opened bags within a half hour. Seems to me this long wait is not good for fish that have already been traveling in those bags overnight, and they should be acclimated sooner than that. Any advice from pet store owners, or those experienced in shipped fish stock? Not sure what to search for, although i did try "acclimating".
I think the important thing is how do the fish get from the bag to the tank in your store ? We never know how the fish were prepared for transport so we don't know if they have released ammonia and such as they were in a small bag..IE: were they fasted for days before transport ? If so then mixing the bag water and the tank water slowly over a period of time is better than just dumping them in . I know there is a debate over weather to drop and plop or use the mix waters method . I Have never ordered fish online so I may not know what is best for that situation , but I use the mix water method when gotten from my LFS and I think if a fish has only been in a bag for a day or so that is the best way . Just my opinion and we all know about opinions ...lol
