I used to have aquariums back 20+ years ago and recently got back into freshwater fish. I have a 55 gallon tank with a full mixture of young fish. I will separate them into two tanks after the holidays. Right now I am having a heck of a time keeping my ammonia down. I have gone through a bottle of Ammolock and am still pulling 2.0 - 4.0 ammonia. I am doing regular changes at about 25%. I left family in charge for 8 days while I was out of state and think they were overfed. Could this be my issue? I am almost ready to do a full tank change.... Help please!

Test your tap for ammonia, straight and after it sits for a bit. You need to find the source, overfeeding could have knocked it out of cycle. Next time pre-measure the feedings.
