Ok. I think for now I'll watch the new fish. If I see signs of illness I'll try the salt.

Personally, I treat all new fish for inch with heat while in quarantine no matter what. Parasites goal is a symbiotic relationship with the host. In nature fish often have low level parasitic infestations, but in our fish tanks the system is closed so the parasites end up overpowering their hosts.

The point of all that is that it's possible for you to introduce the ich parasite into your tank even though your fish aren't showing any visible signs. Just food for thought.

As for your question on how much salt, I've treated using 2 teaspoons per gallon. Pre-mix the salt in a 5 gallon bucket of water and add gradually. I started at 1 teaspoon per gallon. Waited about 8 hours than added the rest to bring the total ratio of salt to 2 teaspoons per gallon. I did water changes about every 3-4 days, replacing only enough salt for the volume of water I removed at each water change. Continue to treat for at least 3 days after you no longer see any visible spots. My fish had no problem handling the salt and this included a pictus cat.

Good luck, hope your new fish remain healthy!

Looking at my rainbow fish tonight. I'm not sure, but I think their lips look pale. I noticed with the last 2 fish that died, they both started with their lips looking white then got sicker as time went on. Is this a symptom of something specific?

I had kept rainbows for a while and there were some of them that i wondered about just the same as you. Nothing ever came from it though i kept tabs on them every day. I told myself it was from rubbing on the glass and stopped worrying about it. Now if it ever starts looking like it's more than that, like fluffy cottony, or something more, then that's a problem that needs to be addressed asap.

Its really easy to make connections that don't exist in this hobby, because we often know so little about what's going on when it comes to pathology. Things like ich are easy to diagnose and treat, but that list is very short. So, I would keep an eye on it but don't dwell on it.

I appreciate this. You're right that I'm getting over sensitive trying to figure out the issue. Thank you for your help. I'll keep an eye on them.

Be sure to keep up with regular water changes. Rainbow fish like very clean water. They are susceptible to cotton mouth. I noticed when I kept Boesemani rainbows that if I skipped a water change they would get the white lips and once I did a large water change it would clear up.
