carbon removes inorganics from the water.

ive heard that its long time use results in fish getting hole in the head disease, however i have never experienced this.

after you dose medicine to a tank, running a filter with carbon helps to remove it, however i personally just use a seperate "hospital tank"

to sum it up, it wont hurt to use carbon on your tank

The use of carbon (in freshwater tanks, anyway) is a controversial topic, so it's best to do research on the topic and decide for yourself whether or not you choose to use it.

We discussed it a bit in this thread:

If you do choose to use it, you must replace it on a regular basis (at least monthly) in order to achieve the benefits it supposedly confers. Some, however, don't replace it because once it is deactivated, it can become a substantial part of your biological filtration as it becomes host to a large number of beneficial bacteria.
