Avoiding syphoning out fry

does anyone have any advice on how to avoid syphoning out fry? I'm a little jumpy about cleaning the tank since I accidentally syphoned out one of my panda gara - crazy little fish went to investigate the tube......next thing I know he's in the waste bucket!
Anyway, he's fine.

But, the fry hang out in the gravel, so how do I clean the gravel without "cleaning out" the fry?

I am paranoid about checking the waste bucket for anything swimming already

Usually fry stay out of the way, but sometimes you can't avoid that. I rarely hit any of mine, but my vacuum tube is see-through so I can see when I snag one, kink it until they get out and then go about my way.

When you go near places that often have hiding fry, tap the side of the glass from inside with the vacuum. VERY lightly, you want them to move not freak. =)

Other than just being watchful and careful, not much else to do. Check everything before getting rid of any water. =) I keep a flashlight handy in case I siphon them into the bucket and I can scoop them back in with little trouble. Usually they are just fine after that, but sometimes they get stressed and need to hide.

Turning on the Aquarium lamp in the morning is MY cup of coffee.

Sorry for the delay in responding....but thanks, nice tip.

My Panda Gara seems to have learned his lesson - he's not gone anywhere near the syphon tube again! and, I'm still nervous, but tapping the tube before I get too near the fry seems to be helping

i found awhile ago if u buy the sponge stuff that u can put in or over ur filter to keep fry from being sucked up in them over the end of ur siphon it has some gaps n stuff for nasty to get out but keeps fry in. not perfect but works ok for water changes when u have fry around

If you look at the store you can find garlic that comes in a fine mesh netting. Put the netting over the end of the siphan and secure with a rubberband.
