Color Changing Senegalus

About a year ago I purchased a baby marbled bichir from my LFS. About six months later, two things were apparent 1) the baby marbled was actually a Senegalus 2) he kept changing color.
With no correlation to change in diet, no change in lighting, and no other change in variables, he periodically changes color. From almost pink to olive green with a tan underside to tan with a white underside. Sometimes he may change color multiple times in one day, sometimes he'll stay one color for a week. The only thing that I have noticed that influences the change is his background. If he is hiding in the plants, he will usually be a darker green color. If he is in a piece of PVC pipe, he will usually be light tan. He is 100% healthy, eating great, and an avid hunter of the occasional feeder minnow.I have never heard of a bichir doing this and I have no idea what is happening. I was wondering if anyone else has had something similar happen or can explain why he is doing this. Thank you
