Fish per gal guidelines?

Would appreciate any input on what amount(or Length) of fish per gallons is appropriate for families of various freshwater fishes. Many years ago I read that the quantity of fish is determined by surface area of tank--is this still applicable? Is the current dimension of inches of fish equal to gallons of tank? I see one inch per gallon on this web site.

Would probably conclude that less fish per gallon would be suitable for heavy body type fish that consume a lot and generate appreciable waste products. Would appreciate any input from anyone on what the current thinking is on this sizing/capacity issue. Formulae or tables most appreciated.

There's a lot of factors that go into it, even how much O2 is in the water. This site helps AqAdvisor - Intelligent Freshwater Tropical Fish Aquarium Stocking Calculator and Aquarium Tank/Filter Advisor
