Can I keep a betta in a community tank? Or do guppies and bettas not get along?

Fish caretaker for twenty some years, but still a newbie at somethings.

Also looking for a free 3d model of a betta fish to use to make my avatar.

Many bettas can live happily in a community setting, provided proper space and compatible stocking. However, not all will be happy to share space since fish are animals and not robots Guppies would not be a good choice to live with a betta.

What size tank?

125 - BGK, chanchito cichlid, pictus cats, silver dollars, palmas bichir
125 - cichlids (severums, bolivian rams, chocolate), rainbows ( turquoise, red), loaches (angelicus, zebra, kuhli and horseface), plecos (BN, RL and clown), denison barbs, tiretrack eel, pearl gouramis, betta
90 - Congo tetras, african knife, upside down cats, spotted ctenopoma, kribensis, delhezzi bichir
2.5 - betta

Having had success with multiple bettas in communities, it can be done. Large tanks help, as do stocking with small, non-fin nipping fish (and potentually bottom dwelling and/or noctural) does help, as well as offering a densely planted tank.

I've never had any problems with 'Impulse Buying'. They're just animals that I forgot I had planned to get.

I have a 55 gallon aquarium with guppies and a Cory catfish. I think a male betta might be a bad idea but what about a sorority of female Bettas with the guppy and Cory?

I canít say I recall any guppy/female betta tanks come through the forums. Itís not something that I would recommend someone do, but it might work. The whole ďbetta sororityĒ thing falls into the same category. Iíve seen some work and Iíve seen some mixed results - claims of success despite disease and deaths. And Iíve seen it not work at all. So I would say to try it and if it doesnít look like itís working then donít try to force it.

Regarding corys, Iíve seen a few accounts of particularly aggressive bettas nipping the fins of the corys. All in all, thatís a very high likelihood of success and a combo I would recommend to anyone.

I cannot say that I would suggest to have a betta in a community tank, and any betta I have ever had has always been by itself happily (granted that is 2 - but not the same tank!). I have known people to try this combination with a community tank, simply having a betta in with other fish, and it did not end well for the other fish sadly despite my suggestions to this individual. Could have been due to overcrowding, territorial behavior of bettas, and a combination of things, too. In summary, I would not suggest it.

Currently have 2 female betas in my 55 gal tank with 6 corys and 6 tiger barbs. They seem to get along with their tankmates. Current tank combo is just a little over 1 week, will give an update in 30-60 days. Bettas don't tolerate any chasing by the tigers, seem to stand their ground. The tigers like to chase each other and tried to chase the corys a while without a lot of success, corys basically ignored and will push the tigers out of the way while feeding tubifex worms that have been pushed on the glass at feeding time. I plan to introduce some Serape tetras and male guppies into my 55 gal tank during the next few weeks and will see how that works out. Corys are absolutely the most entertaining fish ever, the six I have include 2 albinos, 2 greens and 2 peppers. All have their own personalities and quirks with different habits.
LFS has female bettas in the same tank as male guppies which seem to get along in the confined small space tank of less than 10 gal.

I have a 20gal tall community tank with a betta, but everyone has their own niche which is key. I have planted sections and a hollow log for the betta. I have rummy nose tetras which keep low and in open ground. It might work for you, go to a LFS that keeps their bettas in community tanks. You should be able to take it back if it doesn't work out. Guppies wouldn't be my personal pick as tank mates.
