I Had a 55 gallon tank couple of years ago but it did not go well for me not a hole lot of success but I loved to do it.
I just decided to get a new tank and a friend tolled me to get a JBJ Nano. I have got the tank and set it up with some good sand and live rock with a couple fish, mushrooms and polyps. So far thing seem to be going good.
So my question is if I was to invest in some good test equipment what should I get. What will tell me that my tank is on its way down so I can do a water change or look for a died fish or something.
I have been looking at a digital PH tester that I can leave in my tank and check at a glance or should I look for a nitrate or nitrite digital tester you know the ones with the probes that you leave in your tank.
you can get the ph tester, as well as the nitrate but the nitrite you wont need, nitrite levels shouldnt be high at all so the tester will pretty much stay at zero for the entire time if you take good care of your tank.
is there anything else that i should get to make my tank run as good as possible. i have looked into a auto dossier as well as a float valve to keep my water level the same and i just received my RO DI water fillter.
mostly i just want to have a great exsperience this time and i don't that to buy some think that is just going to die in a week because i was not testing the right thing or i over looked some thing. so if i can spend $500 on some nice test equipment and mantanice equipment and buy a fish that lives for years instead of buying the same fish every month because something is not working right or i have overlooked something.

I see your tring to do the right thing this time. Are you tring to get the best equipment for that price. If you are going with a sump CRM can tell you the skimmer alone will take that up. But for the tests just get a master test kit "And Use It". There are people that buy them and wont use them. Lets start buy what are you planning on keeping? Well start there and go from there on what you will need. On my 120 gallon reef system I have a UV Sterilizer, skimmer, 2 overflow boxs, return pump, 5 powerheads and a skimmer.
