I am just starting my first salt water. I added the amount of salt to the tank as directed yesterday, and today I measured it with the hydrometer, but it says it is 1.030....does it take some time for the level to go down, or is my tank too salty?
Generally, it takes about 24 hours for the salts to dissolve completely, and for everything to stabilize. You'll want to remove some of the saltwater and replace it with fresh to bring the salinity down a bit. I'd shoot for 1.023-1.024 for a FO tank, or 1.024-1.026 for a reef.
It should also be noted that temperature can affect the reading in a hydrometer. Make sure the temperature matches the recommendations in the instructions for the hydrometer.
