Question When will my tank be ready??

So I had a 5 gallon with a couple cherry barbs in it and they all got ich and died, and now I just want to keep a single betta in the tank. What do i have to do before I can put a fish in there? Ive already made 3 half water changes, changed the filter, added a tablespoon of salt and turned up the temp to 100 degrees. It's been 3 days since ive done all that so when will I be able to? thankies everyone!

Hmmm... if the tank is empty, clean everything really well (except for the filter media) using a diluted bleach solution, rinse really really well and then rinse again with conditioned water (dechlorinator).

Then you can refill the tank and let it run for a day or two and add the betta. You'll have to monitor the water as you go to make sure you don't have an ammonia spike but with just one fish, you should be ok.

i just did a 100% water change with 110 degree water since i don't want to kill my plants with the bleach and i think im going to let the temp go back down to 78 then add the fish. I also tested the water and everything turned out good except the alkalinity was just a teensy bit lower than normal

i've read in a few books and online that a 5% bleach 95% water solution won't kill plants. in fact a few of the websites advised doing this because it kills any bacteria that previous systems may have had. i'm getting a new 75 gallon tank tomorrow and moving a lot of my decor into it and i plan on filling up a 20 gallon storage bin with 1 gallon of bleach and the rest water then letting all my decorations soak in it.
