what to do with ick tank????

my pike just passed away from ick i went away for 2 days and got home and found him covered in salt like things. i don't have a adjustable heater just one that stays at a steady 78 so i couldn't raise the temp so i started him on some meds and they didn't work . so my question now is what do i need to do to the tank before i can add new fish the tank has been set up for about 8 moths

yes! hopefully you have no fish in your tank now. if there are no fish present for the ick to complete their life cycle then they will die out. this needs about thirty days of fishlessness.please invest in an adjustable heater( 78 is a bit warm) and being able to control temp is good. you can speed the process up by about 2 weeks if you add an ick eradicator. that will kill any cysts that went dormant. 80 to 82 degrees for a day or so will help do them in. do not panic all will be well.
