Good one, but I think my kids would give me up. They are to young to understand the whole don't tell on Mommy thing. LOL

LOL! Great thought, but it won't go far, because what if they get a new one.

Good point, Age.:) I just don't think they'll understand the concept of keeping fish. It'll be worth a try however to lie to them the goldfish died and explain to them why it died. Explain all their needs and how this could also save their cash.:)

I'm going to go with the idea of a small aquarium for their son's birthday. I think even a one gallon with a filter and air and some cycled gravel (courtesy of me!) is better than this. I'm going to try and explain what was going on and tell them that I'd like to get him the aquarium for the gift and hopefully they will say ok.

On a positive note, with twice daily partial water changes, a teeny bit of salt and literally a drop of Melafix the goldfish seems to be doing better. I am slowly pouring the water in to create some air bubbles, maybe that is helping too.

If you have a healthy, empty tank at your house, why not put him in there. It may save his life.

No way! I have NO idea what sort of problems may be lurking with this little guy-did you see my post about performing surgery yesterday on him to pull a piece of metal out of his gill??

Not to mention I am overstocked. My pleco is going to a friend next week, so I can't possibly add another.

I am continuing twice daily water changes, and will keep adding salt and melafix. I'm going to tell them what the deal is, what I did to correct it and what I suggest as a definitive correction, which is a tank for the birthday gift, and leave it at that.

YAY! You're using my idea! :D

On a more serious note however, I agree that you shouldn't put your fish at risk. I can't help feeling really sorry for the poor guy though - it's such a shame! I hope he pulls through.
