Weird Lump

I recently noticed one of my fish has developed an odd lump on his side. He is also starting to develop black spots (not a growth on the fish, but his/her actual coloring). He just isn't looking like himself now... There is a picture below, hopefully you can see his lump...

I have a 30 gallon freshwater tank. It has been setup for about a year. The water was completely changed about 6 months ago, but since then has been empties about half way each month and clean water added.

The tank contains 3 gold barbs, 1 tiger barb, 2 platy, 5 yellow guppies, 3 black tetra. All of the fish have gotten along just fine and the 5 guppies were a recent addition. Previously there were snails (which have since passed and left me with several tiny babies) and two crabs which have also passed due to their daring personalities.

I feel the fish dry flakes twice daily - am and pm. I am using a florescent light and try not to leave it on more than 8 hours (as suggested)

In the interest of keeping healthy fish most experts recommend changing 20 to 25 percent of the water out each week with dechlorinator added to the new water BEFORE it goes into the tank. By doing this you remove many harmful pollutants that can harm the fish.
I am no expert on fish illness or disease but I have found that by maintaining a clean environment that fewer problems with fish are the result.
If you have a test kit you may wish to test the water for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrAtes and post the results here.Or you could possibly take a sample of your water to local fish store and ask them to test it . many will do it free of charge. Until then I am afraid waiting and watching the fish would be the way I would go. If i had a seperate tank where I could isolate the fish I would.

The most important medication in your fish medicine cabinet is.. Clean water.
