Treating for Ich

Okay, I'm reading all these posts - the salt idea sounds good.

I have a dwarf rainbow that I've had about one week. I just noticed one spot on back fin. I'm assuming this is ich. I guess all would agree I should start this treatment immediately???

Will my mystery snail and ghost shrimp live through this?

Thanks

I do not think salt is a good idea with your snail, the shrimp, probably not, I am not sure. Is there only one spot? ICH tends to spread fast.

Okay, I pulled the snail out, don't know what I can do with him though. Don't have another tank.

I see only one spot on one fish, but figure I better get started sooner than later. Can snails carry ich - if I can ask my neighbor to take him, but I don't want to give her tank ich.

The one rainbow that has it, seems to be the one fish more or less bullied by the other, but not bullied bad.

I will almost def say that your Ghost Shrimp would not survive a salt treatment. And you should hit that tank for a minimum of 2 weeks.

ICH looks like your fish have been dusted with powdered sugar. Little specks every where. Google for some pictures.

You need to take out your vertebras before you use salt.

Gwen

ICH tends to hit first the most vulnerable and weak fish:( I don't believe snails can get ICH or transfers diseases.

Marie,

Are you saying that for 2 weeks I should be putting salt in my tank? How often would I keep this dosage up? I'm going to start with the every 12 hours, 1 tsp per gal, but I can't do that for 2 weeks, can I??

Gwen

I've pulled the shrimp and snail out - I've got them in a 10 gal tank, but have no heater or anything in this tank, so i can only do water changes often, and hope for the best. Does anyone know if shrimp can survive in cool water?

Is there any way you can get a heater for that tank? You are awesome for coming up with a tank! But take this as a learning experience and get all that you need for an ER tank...

Hang in there and don't panic! This thread should really have it's own section. We kinda mini-hi-jacked this guys thread.

Perhaps a Mod will move it for us.

Sorry, I was supposed to answer this last night.

Pull out the snail. The shrimp will be fine.

Snails don't contract ich but they might carry the parasites inside their shells like people trying to ride on elephants. You need to place the snail in a tub all by itself and if you have sponge filter, run it otherwise you will have to do daily water changes for the snail. Since the tub will be fishless, the ich cannot survive without parasites after a few days anyway. No treatment needed for the snail.

Continue 10 days of treatment after ich disappears and keep temp consistent at 82-84 degrees. I'd get heater so the treatment won't be prolonged too much.
