Thoughts for my oscar

I have an oscar, either a velvet or a tiger... he is very exuberant when he (she) gets fed .. and sometimes bites my finger. It really doesn't hurt but it can be a bit startling. Well, tonight he bit my finger, hung on and when I pulled my hand back he went sailing through the air and landed on a rather hard floor. He flopped around, then stopped. When I picked him up he made no effort to resist, flop or anything. Back in the tank, he sank to the bottom and slowly swam to the back of the tank and stayed there for a little wile. Now, he's back in his spot (at least when I'm at my desk .. he usually is there, thinks he' s gonna get something) but he is moving slowly, not as powerful as before..
Anyone ever have this happen.. with any fish... I have no doubt he has to be hurt, he had to have fallen something over 5 feet onto linoleum with an undersurface of concrete.
I am really fond of this fish... think he'll survive? What kind of damage is possible? About 10 minutes from the accident, he is just... subdued..
Anyway... signing off for the night... ..

That is very sad, so sorry to hear what happened. Honestly, there is a potential for various types of damage, anywhere from brain damage, spinal cord, organ, etc. What I can tell you is that oscars are pretty sturdy fish, so there is some chance yours can recover. Important thing right now is to keep water extremely clean, diet varied and healthy, and stress as low as possible. These things will help promote healing and help to avoid secondary problems from deveolping. In its current state, your fish will be vulnerable to a wide range of illnesses on top of any possible injuries.

I wish you the best of luck!

Thanks..
As of this morning, he seems to be ok. Actually, last night after the whole fiasco, he went and ate the red shrimp that started it all.
He still seems a bit slower then usual, but I think I'd be stiff after a fall like that.
I also think, but not positive, that he landed flat on his side which was better than on his head.
I am going to do a w/c tonight: he is due for that. His is the only tank with carbon in the filter so I try and do more frequent water changes all round.
