Is There Any Hope For My Goldfish? *Possible Swim Bladder Problem*

Hello! New Member here! :)

I've become increasingly worried about the health of one of my two fancy-tailed Goldfish. I've had them for 10 weeks so far and I keep them in a roughly 30L tank. The tank has about 5L of water changed every 5 days and a complete clean out every month.

One of my fish, is about twice the size of the other. He's always been bloated and now is swimming and resting upside down much more often than he used to. He originally would do it for a few seconds before righting himself, I originally thought this constipation from overfeeding (I feed them roughly 10 small pellets a day). But now it's come to the point where he will lodge himself in a corner and float upside down. But otherwise he is fine, no growths, discolouration, or fin damage.

The other fish is fine. So I'm thinking it's a problem with the one fish and not the tank.

Is there hope for the Fish or are his days coming to an end?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Chips, and welcome to Fishforum! If you can answer a few questions, that will really help with the diagnosis.

First of all, when you say your tank is 30L, do you mean a 30 gallon long tank, or a 30 liter tank (which would be less than 10 gallons)? If it's a 30 gallon, we're fine. If it's a 30 liter, each of your goldfish need at least 10 gallons to themselves - a standard 29 gallon would be great.

Next, can you post your water parameters (ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate)? We need to rule out a water quality problem. Just because one fish is sick and not the other doesn't necessarily mean all is good with the water conditions, so it's best to make sure with a good test kit.

Additionally, what's the temp in your tank? I had a goldfish exhibit the same behavior during the summer time when I could not keep his tank cool enough. My goldies prefer about 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

What kind of filtration do you have with the tank? Brand and gallons per hour would be very helpful.

Keep us posted!
