sick betta fish

One of my bettas has been sick. I've treating him and he is doing much better, But, since he has been sick he has become very finicky and will not eat his pellets any longer. Mainly, I see that he excretes a long thread with sort of a sack on the end and it stays attached for awhile. I never see the excretions of my other betta - what is this?

Uhh... What was your bettas sick with? What does the poo look like? We need more information, like tank size, if you have a heater and filter and water parameters like ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and pH. What did you treat him with?

I can't pin point which one, but it's more-than-likely an internal parasite. These nasty buggers usually attack and upset the digestive tract resulting in odd excretions often white, stringy, or lumpy.

answer your questions

My betta is in a one gallong tank with gravel air pump. I change the water frequently. No heater. I have been treating him with Betta Revive. He seems to be improving - today I have not seen the white, stringy poop for the first time. If I treat him with Parasite Clear, how do I dose for a small tank like this.

I'm not sure of the dosage... What does the bottle say? Your tank is pretty small... How often do you do water changes and how much do you change? 'Often' doesn't give me much to work on... I think you should upgrade to a 2.5 gallon at least, and get a filter and a heater... Betta fish are tropical fish and need a heater. That could be part of the reason your betta is ill and not recovering fast.

Jungle Parasite Clear says dose one tablet for 10 gallons; so I can figure 1/2 tablet for 5 gallons and 1/4 tablet for 2.5 gallongs and 1/8 tablet for 1 1/4 gallons - 1/8 tablet might be difficult....
I change the water every week usually 100% since it is only a one gallon tank
has an undergravel filter

Well if you think you can do an 1/8th of a tablet then I would say go for it. If it gets crushed it doesn't matter because it would have dissolved in the water anyways. It does sound like internal parasites and I've heard the jungle stuff works well so just give your betta some time.

But again your problem is that your tank is to small. I would be changing a one gallon at least two times a week. And if you don't upgrade the tank at least get a heater. I can't really see your betta making a full recovery in cold water.

bigger tank

My other betta is in a 1.5 gallon tank and that seems so much larger for him. He is healthy and no problems. Heaters for a smaller tank?

Yeah, bettas really need heaters to keep the water 78-80 degrees. IMO 2.5 gal tanks or larger are easier to heat.

I responded to your pm concerning how I would dose the tank. Good luck.
