Sick baby severum at lfs

Hi, I'm new here. :) I have a post in the cichlids compatabilty forum...

Anyway, I went to the lfs on Saturday to look for some severums (not to buy yet, but to see if they had any). They only had two little ones and they both were really awful looking and not for sale. The guy said that they came in like that and that he was treating them. There was a lighter colored one and a dark one. The dark one looked half dead and the lighter one looked pretty bad too. They were hiding and barely swimming. I felt really bad for them. The store told me to check back for a new shipment of sevs and I went home.

Today I went back (because I'm obsessed) and the dark one still looked bad, but the lighter one looked a lot better. He was swimming around and he was following me back and forth across the tank. As soon as I would walk over there he would wriggle around and up and down the glass. I fell in love....

I think they have fin rot (thanks to the "fish diseases" sticky post!) It looks almost like something's been eating on their fins and there's white on the edges. I know it's curable, but how likely is it that they will get better? The guy said that he was treating them but I don't really trust him. I mean, I'm sure he's throwing some kind of medicine in every few days but I'm worried. How long does it take to cure?

I told them to hold the light colored one for me... Am I crazy? I wanted a darker colored one, but there's somthing about this sick friendly little guy that stole my heart. I'm going back to visit him this weekend. :)

your not crazy just caring like me! it shouldn't take more than 3-7 days but it depends on the medication you use.

I truly feel for those of you who don't have the quality lfs's that I have. I really do. Both of them have "back rooms" where they are able to quarantine and treat fish that have problems. f only ALL lsf's had these peoples' dedication.

Red flag, Leah, Shop with your head and not your heart. No way can you save them all. And I don't mean to sound uncaring, nothing could be further from the truth. I am just being a realist. I've been there and done that.

herefishy, I understand... :( I do not really like this store, but there are only 3 where I live (actually they are 30min away) and none of them are any better.

We used to have an AWESOME store about an hour away. It was the only store that I've ever been to that specialized in fish. Great selection, clean tanks, and the guy was really knew his stuff. They closed for remodeling and never opened back up.:(

Now the best store is the Petco and hour away. :\
