power outage

when i got home today, my power in my house was off. a transformer had blown down the street. i have no idea how long it was out for, cause i was at work for about 4 hours. i tested the water, so far its all ok (no ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate)- but i did a water change and did not feed the fish their second feeding, just to make sure that if the electricity in my filters was off long enough to cause a mini-cycle in my tanks, that they would have a chance. my question is; how often do i need to check the water, to see if the bacterial load has been compromised?? if i lost some of my bacteria, when would it start affecting my fish?? so far everyone is ok.

If a transformer has blown you probably wuldn't have been out for long. That's a major fault and a lot of customers would have been off supply so it's in the power company's interest to get you feeding off another circuit ASAP otherwise they suffer financially quite severely.

As for the water, test daily for 2-3 days and if there's no change then don't worry. :)

thanks! i came to the conclusion that it couldn't have been off for too long, cause the temp in all the tanks was not much lower. if it had been off a long time, i think my smaller tanks would have been cold. so hopefully htey will all be ok. i will test for a few days, like you suggested and hope for the best! thanks again!

Depending on how many tanks you have, would you be able to get one of those surge protectors with a battery backup in it? Kinda pricy and it's not like it would run for hours on end but at least it would be something.
