Mycobacterium?

How contagious is this bacteria from tank to tank?

Concerned as had a couple strains confirmed on a necropsy done at a fish from our community tank at the place I work at. =/ (None were TB.)

Is washing your hands sufficient enough to kill this bacteria off?

I really don't want anything to happen to my fish.

Does anyone have any experience with this disease? What's the best way to deal with the infected tank?

Myco is very contageous. If you have a confirmed case in a tank you need to have separate everything for that tank. I have a rainbow tank that is infected. I have had this tank, and inhabitants for years. If the fish are kept in excellent water conditions, and fed a quality, varied diet they can live a relatively long normal life. Some of my bows have had this for quite some time. If you notice open red sores, or lumps starting on the fishes body you need to remove, and euthenize that fish. Be sure to wash any part of your hands and arms that are exposed to the water of the infected tank with anti bacterial soap, and use rubbing alcohol also on your hands. Transmission of this disease from tank water to human is rare but can happen.

Keeping everything separate is no big deal. As I said, it's a tank at work. My only participation is really observation and feeding.

Any one know how long the bacteria can last outside of the tank without disinfecting?

I'm not worried about the transmission to people part, even if my hands and arms look like they've been in a fight with a cactus lately.
