My "comotu" is sick....HELP!!!

I have had him for a year 4 months... he has alwas been good and seemes happy... his tail was always sooooooo pretty looooooong and colorful... but two days ago when i was showing him to a friend who came over, I noticed something not right.. his tail has been cut... literally it looks like its been cut with a pair of scissors.... I dont kow what can be wrong.. is it normal, is he changng it, is he sick, he seems all right though eats and swims... moves around his space... normally but his tail looks awful does anyone know what could be wrong??? please let me know...

sounds like your fish could have fin rot here is a picture of it



the symptoms of fin rot are

small holes anywhere on the fins
Fins that seem to be growing thinner or more transparent.
Fins that seem to be "fraying" around the edges.
Fins that seem to be breaking off in large chunks.
Slimey looking areas, usually on the tips of fins, that seem to "eat away" at the fins over time.

does any of this sound or look familer?

could you maybe post a picture of your fish so that we can better tell you whats wrong?

is it just one slit or does the end of his fin look a little ragged? How big is his tank? Is it filtered and heated? How often do you perform water changes?
With that info we can better figure out wuts up with ur lil buddy =D

I have heard, although not seen myself, that some betta fish will bite at the ends of their tails. In none of the symptoms of fin rot are present, I would suspect this. Did this happen overnight, or has it been gradually happening? Fin rot will not usually do that much damage in one day. If you begin to see new fin growth, which will be clear, then it is probably not fin rot, as fin rot will continue to eat away at the ends of the fins until it is treated. If you could post a picture that would be a great help. Good luck.

Another possible cause could be that the fin got torn by some of the decorations in the tank.

Do you have any plastic plants or other decorations with sharp edges that the fish might have gotten his fin snagged on? Betta fins are *really* delicate.
