Hello everyone,
I got my betta about 3 weeks ago and its been fine up til now but over the past 2 days its refusing to eat.
I don't think its sick because its moving around its bowl (2.5 Gallon) just fine, and its not looking sick.
I'm feeding it the "Top Fin" pellets, occasionally it swims up the pellet when its first dropped, attempts to eat it but then lets it out and swims away.
Anyways, the food is collecting at the bottom of the bowl and I'm not sure whether I should continue feeding it or stop because I don't want it to overfeed.
I have no experience with fish at all so any help is much appreciated
Does he look bloated? What are the water parameters? Do you have a heater and filter? We will need to know these things before an accurate answer can be given. On top of it all, betas are picky eaters.
yes bettas are very picky eaters
they would probly not eat one thing but eat somthing else. Your best thing to do is find some other brand of pellets or flakes that he likes. this is proby the most stressfull part in betta keeping in my expierience. contiue to feed his pellets/flakes to him as a staple food in his diet
once you got that coverd you could give him variety in his diet a bit and feed him frozen bloodworms and fozen brine shrimp once a week or so.
keeps your betta happy
He's not looking bloated.
And he's housed in a 2.5 gallon water bowl; the water is treated with conditioner (1 gallon of water : 1 mL of conditioner); the water temperature is around room temperature (~ 22 C); I have no idea what the pH level is or how to measure it.
So you guys suggest for now the best thing to do is get him a different brand of food?
22C might be a bit cold for him,try buying a small heater, as betta like 24-24C, this could be part of the problem (im not sure though), to test ph, a liquid test kit should be used and is usually avaliable at your lfs, there are test strips but they arent great and usually give false results. good luck and i hope he gets better and eats
Get a master test kit that tests for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates...usually when parameters are asked for that's what we need to know although knowing your pH is good too And maybe look into a different brand of food while you're at the store if you go.
Hi everyone,
Appears my problem might be solved!
I went to Pet-Mart to buy another brand of food and the person working in the fish section told me that the reason my betta hasn't been eating is because its been overfeeding.
Apparently I should be feeding him 3-4 pellets every 2 days. Also I was told that the instructions on the food container that say I should feed him 3-4 pellets twice daily are wrong.
you could even feed the fish 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon, just so it doesnt eat one huge meal and have to wait a nother 24 hours to eat again
