I'm about to cry...

My dwarf puffer Apollo, the first one I got, the biggest, and the most active, had to be put to sleep today. I don't know what was wrong guys. I noticed something was off yesterday when he looked a little thin, like as if he hadn't eaten that day. So i put some black worms right in front of him...no response. Water params were fine 0, 0, 20, nothings been changed as far as ph, plants, lighting, temp (80) or anything...no new tank mates...this tank has been running for a while now, approaching a half year...and besides the addition of the whisker shrimp, it's been the same three puffers all along. I do water changes every week, about 40 percent...but anyway, a while ago, may be 2 months ago, I noticed Apollo kind of had a big chin, like just manly looking, I thought nothing of it because his behavior hadn't changed at all. To me it looked like he was just filling out...well yesterday, same time I noticed hey, you don't look your plump self, I noticed he was swimming funny, right underneath the surface with his head pointed towards the surface at about a 45 degree angle...when I come home from work about midnight last night...with out turning on the light I could still see him swimming just below the surface...I went to sleep and hoped for the best...

So I woke up...he was stuck in a plant...=( I was like, "NOOOOO!" I could see his little gills still pumping...so I quickly knocked him free...he kinda fell down and then he rose back to the surface...same swimming pattern...and then he'd swim in front of the filter current...and get knocked down to the ground...he'd try to rise...id see him squirm and flail as if trying to get back...his coloration had darkened, but his bright blue eyes just looked at me...they just seemed to say help me...guy's there was nothing to do! I'm so sorry...I'm like crying now...I had to...I got some clove oil...and I grabbed Apollo and I put him to sleep...does anyone have an inkling to as of what happened? There was no returning from his point...what happened to my little Apollo?

That's not necessarily true. Sometimes we take the best care of our fish and lose them anyway.

The hard part is not knowing what got to them. Don't blame yourself - you don't know what happened.

if he got skinny and fragile it sounds like(if possible[like in cats]) he could have had some sort of diabetes for fish. I would be crying too if i had to put a favorite fish to sleep :(
