I think my fish is in serious trouble...!

I'm new to this site, looking for some help, here are the facts:

1 male crown tail beta, purchased at PetSmart 2 weeks ago, kept in a 2.5 gallon tank by himslef, water fluxuates between 73-80 night/day

Have tried 2 types of filters, one airator/filter - covered the surface with bubbles and didn't seem to work, so we exchanged it for a filter made for up to 12 gallon tank - current didn't seem to rough but I'm not sure. I changed about 75% of the water this weekend.

Water is treated with a Top Fin basic conditioner. Water was very cloudy 3 days ago, so I used a product that is supposed to reduce cloudyness, it was a red liquid, can't remember the name off hand.

ISSUE: He hasn't seemed to want to eat, and tonight I found him floating at the surface. I thought he was dead, then he fluttered. It looks as though he's paralized, he can use the clear fins by his gills, but isn't opening his other fins at all and they look very tattered on the edges. Looks like he's breathing hard.

Is there anything I can do to help this little fella? I put him in some new water, thinking there was something in his tank making him sick. I took out the filter too, thinking it might be the current.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

you should have let you tank run for a while before adding the fish to let it cycle...that is why it is cloudy...you have a filter and no heater?...a constant temperature is necessary..at the point you are at...I would say get a fish bowl ..put in water ( match current temperature) with dechlorinator..get him out of the tank ..read the Fish forum sticky on Betta care regarding Tank Cycling...change you bowl water daily w/dechlorinator and hope for the best.

thanks,

the guy at the store (big mistake listening to him) said I didn't need a heater... I'll def. be getting one

Should have also mentioned, there are no spots, marks, or other visible marks on the fish. I read the fish disease stuff on fish forum, nothing seemed to match

I wonder, could he have had an injury that's paralyzed him due to the filter current, or could he have had a fishy stroke? He was so active for the first 1.5 weeks, other than not eating this behavior seems very sudden

The way you describe his behavior he is being poisoned probebly be the amonia spike in your new tank...that is why he would be better off in a bowl right now..you can do daily water change..you can get a hydor submursible heater it is flat and you can place it on the bottom of the bowl for now and maybe put some stones over it....also get yourself a GOOD water test kit..not the kind with the paper strips..the one that looks like a pool test kit.. don't rely on what they tell you this at the LFS
