I have a new 37 gallon fish tank with a 7 inch pleco, 4 gourami, 5 small angels, and a school of swordtails. Two of my sword tail have been sick, one died last night. :((( I have the other one in a half gallon tank. I know its small but i dont want him to infect the other fish and its the only spare tank I have. He gills are white, Not white fuzz or anything, just white scales. Also he/she has very large white spots on side. But there really white and i dont think its eggs. To young anaway and not bloated. I am doing 2 daily 75% water changes in the half gallon. Hes not eating.
I am going tonight the get water tested, more water conditioner cause I'm running low and heres my question.
Can I use aquarium salt and will it help?? Does anyone know what my swordtail has??????
I need answers within 4 hours!!! please help
Also his back end is hanging down. He swims weird rocking back and forth like a boat being hit with waves from the side.

I am no expert on disease but white spots make me think of ich, look up pictures of ich on fish and see if they are comparable, also can a mod move this to the fish disease forum. Salt can help but im not sure exactly which salt to use. Post a picture of the fish and its affected scales and spots

MUST READ! ALL MEMBERS please read BEFORE posting!
Hi fellow members,

When you create a new topic we will need to ask a number of questions about your situation so we can best determine how to help you. To speed up the process, we ask that you have the following information available at the time of your first post:

1. What is the size of your tank?

2. What are your water parameters? State the brand of test kit used.

3. Is your aquarium set up freshwater or brackish water?

4. How long the aquarium has been set up?

5. What fish do you have? How many are in your tank? How big are they? How long have you had them?

6. Were the fish placed under quarantine period (minus the first batch from the point wherein the tank is ready to accommodate the inhabitants)?

7. What temperature is the tank water currently?

8. Are there live plants in the aquarium?

9. What filter are you using? State brand, maintenance routine and power capacity.

10. Any other equipment used (aside from heater and filter which are two very important components of the tank)?

11. Does your aquarium receive natural sunlight at any given part of the day? What is your lighting schedule (assuming you do not rely on sunlight for our viewing pleasure)?

12. When did you perform your last water change and how much water was changed? How often do you change your water? Do you vacuum the substrate?

13. What foods do you provide your fish? What is the feeding schedule?

14. What unusual signs have you observed in your fish?

15. Have you treated your fish ahead of diagnosis? If so, what treatments did you use? State your reasons for planning ahead of proper diagnosis.

Thanks and good luck!:)

It wasn't white spots he just losing his red color, but after a few fish stores and some reasearch, the hump back and sinking butt and loss of color are just signs of old age. But I struggled finding him after the other old one died, he was resting in the pirate ship and wouldn't come out for food, I have him in a seprate small tank but still eating very little. What should I do?????

Discoloration, bent spine, and large white spots can be Mycobacterium (aka Fish TB).

Could also easily be ammonia poisoning or nitrite, but it's only one fish.

Keep him comfortable, Give him one day of fasting a week, and keep his water oxygenated with an air stone.
Feed him vegetable-rich foods (or peas) in case it's SBD caused by constipation.

As a precaution (It's more than likely not, so don't stress), don't let the water touch your hands, and don't reach in the tank. Also, don't siphon with your mouth.
