I am FREAKING OUT! I just performed surgery!

Please read my post about the Goldfish bowl to get the whole story of this situation if you'd like, but to make a long story short I am fish-sitting a Goldfish in a bowl, and caring for this fish like he was gold, literally!

I noticed something sticking out of his side by a red spot. I searched and searched for what disease or parasite this could be, but found nothing. I scooped him into my net and gently ran my finger across this thing and it was sharp!

I got a tweezer and took a few deep breaths and gave this thing a gentle pull. I did feel some resistance so I gave "Fin" (and myself) a breather, still in the net. I then did this one more time, but continuing to gently pull, and I pulled out a 1.5 cm long PIECE OF METAL!

This poor fish is not only living in a bowl, but now just had surgery to remove a huge (relatively speaking) piece. Poor guy.

I had already done the second water change today, and added the smallest amount of salt and one drop of Melafix.

It might be my imagination but I think he looks happier. He's swimming around more. Here is a photo of what I pulled out.

wow...i think they fed him that somehow before they left since they did say it was acting a bit strange sometime before handing it over. i would seriously give the neighbor a good scolding if i were you, but im just offering an opinion.

Oh my! Poor little fishie. I hope he makes a complete recovery. Wonder where that thing came from.

He came to me with the metal in him, but they didn't know what it was. They just said "there is something wrong with his side" and they thought he might not make the week. Little did they know some surgery, a little salt and melafix and he is better than new!

He is being kept in a bowl, with no cover, on a shelf. I bet they were doing something and the piece of metal fell in. It could be mistaken as a worm and he probably ate it, unable to expel it, it somehow ended up sticking out his side by his gill.

He's doing so much better today. He's swimming better and eating better too. Prior to this he would take food and spit it out, and then eat it again. I guess he was having trouble swallowing.

I'm so glad you went that extra step in trying to figure out what was wrong. Sounds like he's going to be just fine. Kudos to you. :D

Thank you! I felt so bad for him. I thought it was a parasite and I just had to get it off of him. Imagine my surprise when I pulled out a 1 1/2 cm piece of metal!
