Between the new fish and the overcrowded state of the tank it's possible the new fish was carrying it and the goldfish afflicted with it has a weakened enough immune system to get it, while the new fish probably just died from the bad state of the tank.
This is the song that never ends...
Everyone else is absolutely correct. the only other thing I have done which has seen my 5 yr old feeder goldfish survive where all others have died is to treat with either melafix or pimafix. One is antibacterial and one is antifungal. Read the back as it gives good guidelines as to symptoms and advice. The bottles seem expensive but really are cheap compared to the other medicines which have never worked for me. It is the safest for all variety of fish and won't hurt a healthy fish. I have just the one fish in a 10 gal tank and still struggle with nitrate levels even when I do water changes. He is patchy colors because of the illnesses but otherwise healthy. I am no expert but hope this helps.
