Goldfish with blackening tail?

I need some advice. I have two fantail goldfish in a 10 gallon tank. We're going to be upgrading soon to a 20 gallon shortly as they are growing. Anyway, my all-gold one (approx 6 months old) has black on the edges of his tail. I checked the nitrates and they are very high so will be adding some salt and doing a 80% change immediately. In looking up his symptoms I can't find anything that fits his condition other than thinking its nitrate poisoning due to testing the water. Any other ideas? I've never had any problems like this before with the water and I do a 50% change with conditioning and cholrine treament every week along with testing. Do his symptoms fit a nitrate issue to or could it be something elsed? Its hard to tell on our second goldfish because he's spotty and has black on his tail anyway. They are actin fine and eating good. Thank you!

It sounds like you have a ton of ammonia in your water. This leads to darkening colors to an unhealthy life. What are your ammonia and nitrite levels?

In the long run, these Fantails will need a 55G tank minimum. They produce massive amounts of waste, and will reach 10" long (with tail). The 20G tank wouldn't be the best thig to do, as you will need to upgrade again. The 20G, however, can be a temporary holding tank untill space is met.

What kind of filtration are you running?

Thank you for your reply. I tested again this morning (after an 80% water change and some addition of salt on Saturday) and the nitrate level was 40, nitrite was .5. Before this the levels were 200 and 10 so they've definitly come down. My test doesn't test specifially for ammonia. What's strange is that I tested our tap water just to see and its almost perfect so it must be that we need to upgrade our space for the fish. We don't currently have room for a 55 gal tank at this point, but a 20 gal is doable until we can do a major upgrade. I'll be doing another water change today to see if that helps the levels. Also, the black on my gold goldfish has started to lighten, thank goodness.
