Fin rot or rip?

I came home a few minutes ago to find my precious bettas fin all mangly looking. He has always kinda had feathery ended (I dont know how to explain it) fins, but this at first glance looked like fin rot to me. Upon second inspection after I stopped freaking out and running around the house, it looked more like ripped fins, because there were no white markings. Could he be ripping his fins on his plants? Its a fake plant, but I know he loves to swim through them and all that jazz. He is a in a 1 gallon bowl, yes NOT ideal but I am working on the other tank right now, and last bowl cleaning and water change was 8 days ago, I was going to do it tonight. Thanks!

is there a filter, perhaps he got his fins stuck near the filter or something

No, there is no filter, no heater, just a plant, gravel and water.

A picture might answer your problem.:) I suspected finrot because there doesn't seem to be any probable suspects other than water quality. I doubt fake plants would ever be the cause.
