I recently had a Tiger Barb die from dropsy. Symptoms were extended fins, eyes popped out more than normal as well as a distended body. I moved him out of the main 55 gal before he died. As a preventive, I did a water change and have started dosing with melafix and pimafix. Is there anything else I can do?
Make sure everything is as it needs to be in the tank. Dropsy is a symptom of illness, not an illness itself. Usually multiple illnesses, so it's -very- hard to figure out and near impossible to treat. Not contagious...though I'd also have moved him just in case since you never know.
Make sure your stats are perfect and stable, make sure the tank is properly cleaned and filtered, not over-stocked in a way you can't or aren't managing right, and nice clean water. Make sure nobody is picking on anyone either, and that they're not crowded. Stress makes fish open to illness because it can harm their immune systems.
Clean water is the best medicine, and the best preventative(though melafix and pimifix are light and can't hurt unless you have some delicate fish, or labyrinth fish).
