Broken Fin forming cotton ball?

Hi everyone

I need a little help. I purchased this catfish about a week ago from a pretty good fish store. They netted him and when trying to put him in the take home bag his fin got stuck in the net. They fought to free his fin but seemed to use more pressure they needed but finally freed him. He or “she lol” seemed ok but after getting set up in the tank I noticed the fin was separated kind of like a wet feather. Yesterday I noticed this build up around the tip and today it has grown into a cotton ball type thing.
My guess is that maybe its a good this and it is what would take place if the cartledge was broke and its a build up to help with regrowth. Theory, im taking a leap with that one.

So does anyone have the right answer for me on what this may be and if not good what can be done to help him out.....?
There are no other signs of disease or ick in the tank.
Sorry he was on the move, wish i got a better shot.

That's to bad. I'd imagine you're already attached to him, but you might wanna see if you can get an exchange? It was their fault that happened I think.. otherwise I'm not experienced enough to say how to treat it. Good luck though!

It's hard to tell from the picture, but that doesn't look like regrowth. If it is fuzzy then it sounds like a fungal infection to me. What you would need to do is move the fish into a quarantine tank and treat with an antifungal medication. I would not bring him back to the store as he will likely die from not recieving proper care. JMO.

Yeah bringing him back to the store is a bad call... He'll definitely die there. I agree with Kim, try some fungal meds on him... But first, do you think you could try to get a better picture? Does he appear to have trouble swimming or anything because of it? I would definitely let the store know you're not happy about the damage done to your fish... Who knows maybe they will give you the meds for free.

Thanks all!

I thought it would have been a little odd for fungus because there were no other signs of it anywhere and I was thinking if the cotton ball was fungus that grew that fast it would be visible else where. Even though my first idea was to take her/him back, they would have just dumped her/him in the trash can. How the hell do you find the sex of a fish? Lol

I had some fungus tabs stocked away and added a tab this morning. Im running a 55 gal tank and the tab is rated for 1 tab per 10 gal, I only dropped in 1. It has seemed to have worked enough and the fuz is getting smaller already. I dont have another tank to med only one fish so I tried a very low dose. Ill keep a eye and drop another in the morning if it is still decreasing in size.

***can you guys tell me how to set up my account in order to have a email sent to my personal email when there are post I post that get replies or replies on post i reply in?*** I thought I marked it in the account but im not getting up dates..:(

It's very common for bacterial or fungal infections to take over at the site of an injury like that. Keep us updated on how the treatment is going!
