I have 6 cories, 6 dwarf gouramis,4 zebra danios 3 platies and 1 bushynose pleco,1 live plant water stats ammonia 0.25ppm, nitrite 1.0ppm, nitrates 10ppm, pH 7.4
I'm unure of what approach to take with treating my fish for ich. I'm new to keeping tropical fish but I already love them! please help with as much detailed info you can give thank-you greatly appreciated!

what is the size of your tank?

i have found that adding 1 teaspoon of salt per 5 gallons helps, put the temperature up a few degrees and try doing 25-50% water changes every other day or every day to try get rid of the ich, continue the treatment even if the symptoms have gone from the fish, ich can still lurk in your tank. good luck

 whoops sorry i only realised that you put that in the subject sorry.
the salt can be table salt, i know alot of members argue over this but i have read that it is ok and another member Lupin said that it was perfectly fine, and it is, none of my fish were effected when i was using salt to treat velvet

edit: i was just reading in my book that salt can harm catfish, i would just watch and make sure that nothing goes wrong, and says 1 tablespoon per gallon. the other one i told you was a salt bath where you use 1 teaspoon per 5 gallons in a hospital tank. mmm confusing

i dont think the plant will be harmed, ive just contacted another member about the salt. the salt can be removed by water changes but im still unsure about the catfish, do you have an extra tank that they can be put in? the salt can just be put in it will dissolve when it hits the water. sorry im a bit confusing and im confusing myself.

for adding the new water to the aquarium can i use a plastic bucket just to condition it, the toxins won't leech into the water from the bucket will it?

i'm actually not quite sure of the siz i did a convertion on the comp n it said 37gal but we put in way more than 8 buckets of water in from a 5 gallon bucket!

ok ive just got the pm back from one of the members 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons and disolve it in a cup of water first before adding it to your aquarium for your catfish, then turning up the heat a few degrees (if its on 78 ish) should help. good luck :D

oh and thanks Lupin for the salt information :D

With such high ammonia and nitrites I would recommend getting your tank parameters in order before treating. Fish require pristine conditions to recover from something like that, and certain medications can even be very harmful when added to an uncycled tank. You should probably be doing 75% water changes every day before and during treatment, and then once the treatment is over you can begin to cycle your tank.
