Unhappy 3 Dead fish?!

I have a 20 gal long aquarium that has been set up for almost a year now. I had the following in the tank:

Live plants
1 male beta
4 harlequin rasbora
1 cardinal tetra
1 siamese algae eater
3 cory cats

They have all been together for the last 8 months.

Over the last 2 days I lost the siamese algae eater and 2 of the cory cats. No apparent signs of disease. I've noticed that there is some browning of the leaves of the plants also. I tested my ammonia levels and they were at about 2.0, but that was after there had been 2 dead fish in the water for possible 12 hours prior to me knowing, so I'm assuming that's why the ammonia levels where high. I've added some ammonia lock to the water and am going to replace about 1/3 of the water today.

Any ideas why I may have lost the bottom dwellers and also what's up with the plants turning brown?

I would keep checking the water params every day, and you might need to keep doing partial water changes. Are you using a liquid test kit? The strips aren't very reliable. And you should check your nitrate/nitrite levels as well.

What kind of plants do you have? The edges of java fern leaves will turn brown, that is normal.
