Before I put any life in here, I wanted to move it to a different stand. I built the new stand and just need to paint the top so I can get the tank back up & running. I have the rock in a few 5 gallon buckets with powerheads. I am back from Disney, done with school and plan to have the tank going by the end of next week! Will post updates with pics soon!

I got discouraged with the lack of room in a 16 gallon. I know it isn't terribly bigger, but I do have a 20 gallon Tall hanging around that a friend gave me. The rock has been cooking for about a month now, I have two five gallon buckets with powerheads keeping the water moving.

I will move the sand and everything over to the twenty after I build the stand for it. I hope that the wife doesn't get too out of sorts this weekend while I finish that and start the transition...

My stocking list is as follows, but I would like alternative suggestions:

Two False Percs
One Goby (I think a red-banded high fin)
Two Yellowstriped Cardinalfish

I am going to keep Shrooms, Zoas and maybe a Leather. Down the road I will also add a frogspawn and a Rose Bubble Tip Anenome.

For a CUC, I will have hermits, Nassarius Snails, Cerith Snails and a couple Peppermint Shrimp.

Thanks! Everything in my house is a "work in progress". We are planning on moving, so I have been remodeling the kitchen in order to make the house easier to sell. I am just finishing up that project so I feel I could start this one again...

Yeah, moving seems to put a damper on things.

Because of some extunuating circumstances at home (we took a foster child in and that took up a lot of my time and fish tank funding) and the fact that I thought the 16 was too small, I decided to change this project into a 20 gallon tall. This will up the ante on my fish choices, and keep water quality a bit more stable (though not much).

I left the 16 running empty with the lights off (to not encourage any algae growth) since I think January (The foster child starting living with us in December, so shutting off the lights in Jan makes sense). She went back home on May 1st and I decided it was time to move everything over. I built a new stand (that can actually fit a 29, in case I want to upgrade) and painted the back of the tank blue.

This weekend I moved everything over and had no problems. I am keeping it empty for about three weeks to make sure there is no mini-cycle from the move. I attached a picture of the tank's progress:

IMAG0555.jpg

I have a Green Element EVO 18" light (7 10000k 3w LEDs and 3 Actinic 3w LEDs), two Hydor Koralia 240 gph powerheads, an Aqueon 100w heater and a modified Prizm Skimmer (I will keep you updated on how the Prizm works. These skimmers have a bad rap, but I got it for free and replaced all the tubing on it). 4" Deep Sand Bed and 25 lbs of Rock.

EDIT: The lighting appears more spotlighty in pictures than it is in real life. The problem with this fixture is that the Bulbs have no diffusers on them, so I just ran a piece of plexiglass across to diffuse the light a little. I will keep this thread updated as I test parameters and add species. Right now my goal is two False Percs, a Yasha Goby, a Pistol Shrimp and some shrimp, crabs and snails. I hope to add the CUC by the middle of June...

I can't wait for you to start stocking this pretty little thing!

. . .but don't you have life already? Even the ROCKS are live in salty tanks! ^.^
It's different, I know. . . but I'd LOVE to hear a little bit more about what might be living in there already, if you have time to share? Bristleworms?! Pods?! Looks like I'm not the only freshie stalking your thread. . . tell us more!

You never did show pictures of your stand, either, and I believe you promised that months ago.

Keep up the good work, man! I can't wait to see what lies ahead. . . I know nothing about saltwater tanks, so believe me when I tell you - I'm ALL EYES to see this one grow!!!

Right. But I did experience a small cycle that most likely killed off any "life" such as pods and worms. I will go to the LFS this weekend and raid their rock bin for rubble and ask for a scoop of sand to "revitalize" this tank's live-liness...

Here you go. I need to take an up close of the top. I made this from a pair of pilaster blocks I found in the boneyard at work and a Cherry countertop I also found in the boneyard (I work at a lumberyard, so the boneyard is the place where stuff that hasn't been picked up is. I got this material for free). I built it to accomodate a 29 gallon, which I hope to upgrade to next time PetCo has a $1/gallon sale.
