Because of some extunuating circumstances at home (we took a foster child in and that took up a lot of my time and fish tank funding) and the fact that I thought the 16 was too small, I decided to change this project into a 20 gallon tall. This will up the ante on my fish choices, and keep water quality a bit more stable (though not much).
I left the 16 running empty with the lights off (to not encourage any algae growth) since I think January (The foster child starting living with us in December, so shutting off the lights in Jan makes sense). She went back home on May 1st and I decided it was time to move everything over. I built a new stand (that can actually fit a 29, in case I want to upgrade) and painted the back of the tank blue.
This weekend I moved everything over and had no problems. I am keeping it empty for about three weeks to make sure there is no mini-cycle from the move. I attached a picture of the tank's progress: IMAG0555.jpg
I have a Green Element EVO 18" light (7 10000k 3w LEDs and 3 Actinic 3w LEDs), two Hydor Koralia 240 gph powerheads, an Aqueon 100w heater and a modified Prizm Skimmer (I will keep you updated on how the Prizm works. These skimmers have a bad rap, but I got it for free and replaced all the tubing on it). 4" Deep Sand Bed and 25 lbs of Rock.
EDIT: The lighting appears more spotlighty in pictures than it is in real life. The problem with this fixture is that the Bulbs have no diffusers on them, so I just ran a piece of plexiglass across to diffuse the light a little. I will keep this thread updated as I test parameters and add species. Right now my goal is two False Percs, a Yasha Goby, a Pistol Shrimp and some shrimp, crabs and snails. I hope to add the CUC by the middle of June...
