I am planning on constructing a pre-skimmer to take care of that surface scum. Right now I have a canister just moving water around, so I was thinking of adding a Prizm skimmer and another powerhead. I am trying to figure out the best way of modding the skimmer, but I also want to add a pre-skimmer to skim the surface using the skimmer pump.

Any suggestions?

Wow, it looks great can wait to see what else is going to be added...

540L/140G - 'Tidal Jungle' (Crabs) | 254L/67g - 'Backwater Pool' (Fish/Snails) | 96L/25G - ''Twisted Minds" (Fish/Snails)

I've never had any problems with 'Impulse Buying'. They're just animals that I forgot I had planned to get.

I had bought a 75 off a customer of mine a couple of years ago. It came with all sorts of goodies that I could never use and I just stored them in a tote in my basement. Last weekend we had a tag sale and I put that bin out for sale. While I was selling most of the bin off for a dollar here or a five bucks there, I found a Fluval surface skimmer that hooks up to a canister filter. I cleaned it up and added it last night:

When I first added the surface skimmer the inlet fitting was too big, so I was getting microbubbles (as you can see in the pics). I changed out the fitting and as of this morning I couldn't see any microbubbles. I shined a flashlight in, but will get a better view when I get home tonight...

Diatom bloom has started!

I also think I am getting a hint of hair algae. Phosphates must be present; I am using RO/DI a friend makes, but he might need to change a filter. I will probably order GFO this weekend and throw it in that empty canister for a day or so...

I will post pics soon, but for now an update to the process:

I have been dosing Kent Marine Part A and B supplements. I haven't tested to make sure it is upping anything and I do have to go get an Alk test this weekend.

Right now I am going through and algae cycle. I had very limited amounts of Live Rock in this tank (maybe two or three lbs) between what my buddy gave me and the LFS sold me. The base rock is still maturing and is covered in Diatoms and a little bit of GHA. I added GFO on Monday, so I should see a recession in the GHA and Diatoms by this weekend. If I start to see one, I will add a few crabs and snails to take care of the rest.

I sold a tablet on ebay that I bought my wife so she wouldn't use my computer, but she hated the touch screen. I am purchasing this light and will give a review after setting it up. I have read that it can spotlight, but I think just adding a diffuser will help. Right now I have the black hood that came with the tank on there, but I will change it out when I get this light to 1/4" plexi lid with diffuser and more plexi for the back. I will post pics of that too.

I am going to throw some hermits and some snails in this weekend start cleaning the rocks and glass. I added a new light and am building a new stand (the one that came with it is weak). While building the stand, I kind of waited to add anything so I can move the tank easier. It has seriously been running empty (although I saw a bristleworm, a ton a pods and of course some algae) of life for two months now. It is time to add some life...

I will post pics of my stand and tank this weekend.
