I forgot to update. I brought home the Tuskfish on Tuesday, Dec 15th. It is doing great, in quarantine, eating well and very curious. If all goes well, it should be in the display by mid January.
it was "resting" and its not uncommon for certain saltwater fish to do this or something similiar like bury into the sand at night or create a mucus like cacoon around them until morning.
And that, my friends, is why you use a quarantine. When a perfectly "healthy" fish dies for no apparent reason, you are not risking an entire display full of fish to infection from some unknown / unseen pathogen or virus.
Yes, the Tuskfish was dead when I came home from work. That one was a small hit to the wallet. Hopefully I can get a replacement from the LFS at their cost.
I've always felt that is a risk you take with marine fish. The stress these fish go through prior to purchase is just unbelievable. The moment you step away from bread and butter fish and start buying fish that are not "hardy" by nature, you are rolling dice to a degree. Its a chance we take.
I agree, but it doesn't always end up bad, but experience or not, all who are in the hobby of fish keeping experience the exact same thing at one time or another.
sorry for the loss again, was really looking forward to seeing it
I'm sorry you lost the Tuskfish. I was also looking forward to seeing it. This story certainly drives the point home as far as QT is concerned. Will you replace with another Tuskfish?
I'm not 100% decided. If the LFS will get me another at their cost, which I'm pretty sure they will given my history there, then I will give another one a chance. But if they won't cut me a deal, then I will have to think about it. I just can't get my arms around what happened, which has me a little scared of this particular species. It might be an issue where they just don't respond well to shipping.
What do you use to do deep cleanings? I personally use vinegar and warm water. I scrub the tank down with vinegar, then rinse it out with warm water. After a few times of that, I soak it in warm water for a few hours, to dissipate the vinegar.
I think this is a great technique. I really used poor choice in words. I did 5 gallon water changes on 3 consecutive days, cleaned all impellers, gave the skimmer a good adjusting, cleaned algae, stirred up all detritus and siphoned it out, wiped algae, etc.
I don't see the need for a total breakdown, given that no signs of parasites or other disease were present. This has been a very reliable Q up until this death, with some rather sensitive fish spending time in Q.

As to fish, I have no idea how many more I will add. It won't be a lot, I can tell you that. The tank is starting to take on the look I want and I'm seeing some nice growth from the fish. I will probably add a few smaller sized fish that are not bite sized and are capable of holding their own. I would love to find a mated pair of Flame Angels.
how many fish do you plan to still add? any chance a school of fish?
