I'm sorry you lost the Tuskfish. I was also looking forward to seeing it. This story certainly drives the point home as far as QT is concerned. Will you replace with another Tuskfish?

I'm not 100% decided. If the LFS will get me another at their cost, which I'm pretty sure they will given my history there, then I will give another one a chance. But if they won't cut me a deal, then I will have to think about it. I just can't get my arms around what happened, which has me a little scared of this particular species. It might be an issue where they just don't respond well to shipping.

Where was it caught? It could have been a victim of being caught by cyanide.

How long was it at the LFS?

That was my thought as well. The LFS had the fish for 7 days. It was extremely active, swimming, eating, curious, and bold. It behaved the same way in my tank for the first 11 days, then died overnight for no apparent reason and without symptoms.

As a precaution I did a deep cleaning on the Q tank and plan to let it run without fish for a couple weeks before I use it again.

What do you use to do deep cleanings? I personally use vinegar and warm water. I scrub the tank down with vinegar, then rinse it out with warm water. After a few times of that, I soak it in warm water for a few hours, to dissipate the vinegar.

I think this is a great technique. I really used poor choice in words. I did 5 gallon water changes on 3 consecutive days, cleaned all impellers, gave the skimmer a good adjusting, cleaned algae, stirred up all detritus and siphoned it out, wiped algae, etc.

I don't see the need for a total breakdown, given that no signs of parasites or other disease were present. This has been a very reliable Q up until this death, with some rather sensitive fish spending time in Q.

i too was looking forward to seeing the fish.
so sorry it didn't make it.

when you set up a new tank, hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor, that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.
