I know this is not the right forum for this but I am not sure where else to turn.

We were on a cruise ship in one of the New Zealand Fjords a few years ago and I took 2 pictures of what I thougt was a dolphin from our cabin balcony. Now that I am looking at it a few years later it looks more like a big fish.

Can anyone identify this thing, from 2 pretty bad pics?

Regards,

Damon

It almost looks like some type of ray to me. I'm basing this on what looks like the positioning of the eyes on the head, and the movement of water around the fish. The water surface around the fish looks like the kind of effect you see from the wings of a ray. How deep was the water where you were? It's not al all uncommon for many species of rays to come up to the water's surface then head back down again. It's pretty hard to tell from these pictures but that's the first thing that came to my mind.

PS. Had that been a dolphin or a shark you would have clearly seen a dorsal fin, based on the position the fish is in when you took these photos.

Thanks for all of the replys!

I am pretty sure it is Milford Sound in New Zeland. We hit several fjords that day..and it was a few years ago. I think the water is pretty deep there, Britannica says it reaches 1680 ft, 512 m.

Good point on the way the water is moving around it...in a circular fashion. It does look ray like. Or a big cat fish or something. I have tried to attach a picture of the surroundings and a blown up image of the thing.
