alright so a brief update....
started dosing for Alk and Cal... its going well with daily testing working out a pattern...
the lights are due to be delivered 9/14 (tracking says on time so we will see)
over the last week end i got a new piece of LR with 5 mushrooms on it for a great price (for my area any way) got it home got it dripped and put it in and now a few days later i realize what a great deal i really got !!! it has 5 mushrooms, 1 coral (yet to be identified pix soon so help would be greatly appreciated), 1 Kenya tree (i have been wanting one for some time now), and 1 small brittle star!!!!!! man i made good on a $20.00 frag!!!
also got a deal on another coral (though i am not sure how it will do) i was looking at this real nice piece of finger coral and was talking to the owner who said i could grab it for $7.00 (GREAT PRICE) he told his helper to grab it and we got wandering around.. when i got home the guy put in a really nice and large frag of SPS coral instead!! so not being able to head back out i said i would give it a try .... so i mounted it on a piece of LR and placed it high in the tank ... it seems ok so far but i am sure it will do much better under the new lights once they are here...

oh and before i forget i added a 4 inch deep bed of crushed coral to the sump and the wife surprised me with a 20# sack of live reef sand .. sho was so happy i could not say no so i put it in the display tank which helped to hid the rest of the plumbing from the closed loop.....put it heavy on the sides and mixed a bit in the middle... each day i mix it in more to even out the look... i really like it ....

quick update i have been tracking my lights on UPS just bout every 8-10 hours (its been a long week LOL) and they are out for delivery as i type this ... as i am just like a little kid when getting something in the mail i am going to have a hard time today so i intend to throw myself into my work and stay as busy as possible ...

last night i decided i wanted to see a bit more of the corals on that piece i got last night and i wanted to attempt my first frag... so i got a little help from the better half and got to work i now have two Kenya trees and most of the others are on smaller pieces that i can see better.. i also found another coral i have yet to ID on it and once everything is settled i will get more pix... it looks like either a mushroom with lumpy tentacles or an bubble tip anemone ..i am not really sure at this point...

decided while doing all of the cutting last night that a frag rack will A) not look right with my new rock work and B) not help with the snails and crabs bumping everything around soooooooo i am going to try something a little different i am going to either use a prefab breeder trap or make one i can hang while in use and then remove after the corals move back into the rock work... a few benefits here one the snails and crabs can not bother them while they heal or relax, two they will get better light for a period while healing, three the flow at the top of the tank is greater and this will assist them in staying clean...

one of the things you can try is to drill holes in the live rock so that frag plugs can sit into them and the newly frags won't topple over or get bumped by snails knocking them over and into the rock work. i drilled several holes into my LR and it worked out great. i can put frags into them to see what it looks like and then pick them up and move them to another location. then when i finally decide that's where i want the frag, i leave it there and the frag eventually grows into the rock lookingl natural.

btw, if you look closely at the pic in the 5th picture of the mushroom, to the far left, you'll see some bubble algae which is not a good thing. if you can remove them asap because they may look cool now but they are prolific and will spread all over the tank. do not pop the bubble algae because the spurs will be released and bubble algae will spread rapidly. you can remove the rock and physically remove them or buy emeral crabs thats are natural predaetors. the emeral crabs can be a hit or miss though.

i forgot to mention that while we had the piece out last night we removed them out side of the tank in case of any popping ... they are gone i thought thats what it was but not being sure i got rid of it before it became an issue ....
