i was making some changes on my 55g tank and i decided to "re-start" it, so i'll post pics daily so you see the changes on it. will be buying a protein skimmer soon. currently: live rock, live sand, lunar wrasse and a blue head wrasse.
im just curious what your alk, cal and mag levels are? you never posted anything about them. also what kind of lights are you running?
the tangs should really be in a larger tank. IMO a single tang shouldnt be in a tank smaller then a 75. do you plan on upgrading soon?
the CB shrimp may or may not rip the arrow crab to pieces. these guys seem to be a hit or miss with their atitude.
i suggest strongly doing alot of research before making any purchases ESP. BEFORE removing anything from the wild. reefs are struggling as they are and removing things isnt helping. infact alot of places have laws against doing so. there are also proper collection techniques and usually limits.
the only law here where I live is Not to take corals, and i was told that a yellow tang can be kept in a 55g being the size it is right now, the Lights are CoraLife T5. the Alk, Cal and Mag cant get them right now cause need a new Kit. and I might upgrade to a 155g. and every fish i have in my tank have been caught on the wild exept the yellow tang.
thats pretty cool. im not saying you cant catch wild ( if your in a place to do it ) but i wanted to make you ( and anyone reading ) there are laws and sometimes very serious ones. usually involving coral and live rock, but they still exists.
a 150+ would be a great size for both the tangs you have. they grow very fast and will reach most of their size within the first year. not to mention size wise, they are hogs and in the wild graze the rock work for food all day which means they naturally have a high bioload which means they are messy and poop alot. if you go with the bigger tank, you'd be better off.
heck yeah, they poop a lot, currently im feeding him Frozen Brine Shrimps and started today to also feed Frozen Mysis Shrimps. Planning to buy Spectrum Pellets, would they give more coloration or do the lights have effect on it to?
limit the brine shrimp. they arnt very much in nutrition.
find an asian supermarket close by if you can. look there for algae sheets ( ask them, say your making sushi ) they have dried algae sheets and they're pretty cheap. it would also be smart to pick up some selcon and a garlic additive. it doesnt take much of the selcon and the garlic to do a world of wonders. while your at the asian supermarket it may also be wise to grab a bag of mixed seafood usaully for a couple bucks. ( nothing pre-cooked! ) and take it home, rinse it, grind it up and make your own food blend.
and since you want corals, pick up a new alk, mag, and cal. liquid test kits AND the suppliments needed to dose for them. test and dose until you get the hang of it and your levels are stable AND then you'll be ready to add another coral or two. anemones NEED a reef enviroment too, and are esp. fragile. they require the alk, cal and mag levels like corals and for them to be stable. on top of that they need high intensity lighting ( preferably halides ) for ultimate health.
well then i might have good Alk, Mag and Cal levels cause that anemone has been living for like 3 months no to mention that I bought the lights yesterday, so maybe i'll be watching improvements in like a week or two. and the algae sheets, would Wardley Algae Discs do? i got some here, i threw one to the yellow tang and he keeps bitting it, maybe he liked it
well your first anemone picture looked severly bleached. i was also unable to id it, i think it rejected its "tenticles" or whatever you want to call them. which is a sign of not being healthy. i guess time will tell and a alk, mag and cal liquid test kit is needed not an option and IMO even those with a fish only tank need these and should dose for them. the fish only tank wont be using up these as fast as the reef setup will, but they should still be there.
the first anemone picture was a Carpet Anemone, the dont have tentacles that long as a Condy/Haitian Anemone. BTW what should i feed the anemone, im feeding her Normal Frozen Shrimps, the one u and I eat she ate it entirrely so i guess she liked it
feed chopped silversides or you can squirt some mysis towards its mouth out of a turkey baster.
the nem looks terribly bleached. is it still sticky and accepting food?
yeah, ill take a picture of it and post it, by the way the nem im talking about is the condy one not the first one u saw.
