My 2.5g desktop reef

I work in a shop and business always gets pretty slow in the winter. I decided to start a small tank on my bench so I'll have a hobby in the upcoming season. I got a 2.5 gallon allglass and a 12" strip light with a 20 watt 50/50 pc bulb. I used aprox 4 lbs of live rock from my sump at home and aprox 5 lbs of live sand from my reef at home. I am running an azoo palm h.o.b. filter, a small heater, and an airstone. So far I have 5 small colonies of zoas, a couple mushrooms, brown star polyps and green star polyps, 1 hermit, 2 astrea snails, and 1 small blue and gold damsel. Tank has been up and running for about 2 weeks and all is well. I am really impressed with how well the azoo palm filter works. Its completely silent and can move quite a bit of water for its size.

Thanks! The small volume of the tank and the high output of the single bulb put me at aprox 10 watts/gal after sand and rock displacement. I'm wondering if I can keep SPS in there. Any input?

I have no idea on the SPS but would love to see pics of your other tank. Your 2.5 is so well done I'm sure the others are just as spectacular.

Do you think this would be practical if you didn't have other tanks to take cycled materials and water change water from? I would love to give this a try but am otherwise out of saltwater right now. I'm wondering if the necessary consistancy can be gotten making up such small batches of water for changes.

It can, but you also have to consider it's what in the tank that matters. I had a heavy softy tank, but there were no fish in it and had ok growth. You do need to stay on top of topping the tank off often to keep evap from being less noticeable.
