can anybody tell me is this safe , i going to add more salica sand to my main tank which aready running a year and have some Angels,Blue & Yellow Tangs and invertebrats and corals.I 'll rinse
the sand until the water is clear, the tank already has half inch sandbed
i wouldnt remove the fish. you would more likely have to remove your live rock to accomplish that, and would prob. prove to be more stressful then a small sand storm would be for a day or two.
let me start by saying ive never added sand to an existing sandbed but if i were to do it i would get a piece of PVC pipe thats a few inches wide. pour the rinsed sand down the PVC to your sandbed vs. just pouring it in the tank. i dont think i would use that kind of sand either personally but im not saying it wont work. silicates may cause algae issues.
it may be wise to run lights out for a day while the cloudiness settles, possibly a hang on or canister filter with floss for a day as well to help catch some of the silt, but i would remove this after a day or two max.
after the tank clears and turning your lights on, i would take a clean turkey baster ( i have one strictly for the tank) and use it to gently blow any sand off of my corals as sand sitting on them + light will burn them.
