I belong to a reefing club and today i went over to a members house to pick up a few cups of sand and some cheato for my sump. Well i got my sand, got my cheato as well as about 50lbs live rock, 10+ corals some are full rock colonies, some stomatalla (sp?) snails, coral fragging glue, bucket of carbon and some other things for free without asking for it.

Now, im not asking you to empty your display tank. .but if you can spare a frag-PASS IT ALONG. Our reefs are sadly being over harvested and if we wish to have this hobby last for years to come-we are responsible for its conditions..not only is it the right thing to do but if you think about it.. the more harvesting = the less quantity that is available = higher prices in stores = less $$ to buy frags = less filled display tanks and eventually = the destruction of our worlds natural reefs (take a look at what we are already doing to the rain forest, or i should say already did) . . . a simple solution is to pass atleast 1 frag along to someone, whether its a common or rare one share the beauties of this hobby.
when this stuff grows out- i for sure am passing around some pieces

And just as important, never make an impulse purchase. Always do your research and make sure you have the ability, knowledge, and time to care for the animals you purchase long term.

as well as that, try to purchase tank bred specimens as often as possible - not only will they most likely be hardier than wild caught.. it will also prevent over harvesting of the fish as well.
