A week ago i set up a 29 gallon saltwater aquarium. i put live sand in it. where do i go from here?

Tell us a bit more about the set up you have.

Lighting, filtration (probably live rock?), powerheads etc. down to the make and model.

Tank dimensions?

How deeps the sand bed?

What do you mean by "Set up"? I would consider a tank that is set up to have everything that needs to be done, done.

i have lights, filter, heater, powerhead, about 3 inches of live sand. it has been running for about a week. i do not have live rock yet.

What kind of filter is it? What kind of media is in that filter? How big (GPH) is the powerhead? Who makes it? What kind of lights? Compact Flourescent, Metal Halide, or High Ouput T5?

Add another inch of sand. Anything under 4" (except less than 1") will become a detritus trap. Right now is it just water and sand? You need Live Rock as an appropriate form of filtration. And a Protein skimmer. Start buying some live rock and some base rock (or "dry" rock). Let this sit in the tank to promote some coraline growth. In a few weeks you should be ready for a fish.
