That should be more then enough for the tank. You could keep most any SPS accept for the low light SPS perhaps... not sure though, but it'll be enough. You will only need to get the 70W fixture. It may be a lot so you could raise it high off the tank and use a small computer fan to blow the air accross the top. That'll bring the temp down by a few degrees. I also have a 2.5g Picotope tank that's being run with a 10w Power Compact 50/50bulb. everything is going well and keeping some of it's color. It's in my signature if you want to check it out.

Happy Reefing.

I have a 5 gallon which the light doesnt work anymore and the switch is broke too. so I use a reading lamp. and the fish get plenty of light and warmth from it. I thought this would have to work, since Im not going to go out and spend a ton of money on another tank, .. the fish are happy..

probably. If you blow the fan away from you, you shouldn't really feel anything, but go to a local LFS, they should be using MH in at least one of their tanks, or display tanks, and just put your hand close to it. That'll give you an idea of what you'll be dealing with.

When you put the fan on the tank face it down at the water it helps alot. I run over a 1000 watts on my 125 reef tank. When i first put my fans on 2 in and 2 out i put them just blowing at the lights my tank would still run about 81,82 at the peek time. But now i have them facing the water it keeps it right around 79 to 80 at peek time.Good luck and happy reef keeping

I think that you shouldn't have too much heating issues if you are able to raise this light 6-8in off the surface and use the fan. You can even go higher if you're able to (talk about a bright desk light) 10-14in, but you, of course aren't going to get the same intensity as closer, but with that much light over such a small tank it should be fine... as for the glass on the tank, i don't really agree with this, sorry Cody. Closing the top will not allow for oxygen exchange to occur and it'll mess with your PH.

Plenty of tanks have glass tops. This is vital in small reefs with a lot of lighting to make sure evap doesn't get out of control. The main issue I see in having a glass top is that it blocks light somewhat. I have one on my reef, and no complaints from me. No jumping fish, no thing bad falling in the water, etc. I have plenty of oxygen as well because my powerheads are directly at the surface, and my pH stays at 8.1-8.4 (tested at different times of day).

As to the question, I have no idea.

Staring directly into the sun will damage your eyes, but the light that it emmitts doesn't harm you. same goes for a MH, If you are staring into a 400w MH then yes, it'll hurt and you'll see poorly for a long while and it could even damage them, but the ambient light given off shouldn't cause any harm like the sun.

To each his own, I personally don't use a cover.

Well to kinda join the side conversation, I personally don't use lids on my larger tanks, like my 600g main display tank

not only is it pretty costly for not that much benefits, it blocks light and doesn't let me get into the tank when I need to

On my 24 gallon tank though, I do use a glass lid and besides having to clean salt creep off of it every now and then, it hasn't seemed to harm anything...

so I'm cool both ways lol :p
